Skills

I have developed many skills during the preliminary project including drawing, editing, filming and  communication skills. I am never in a situation where I need to draw so drawing the pictures in the  storyboard was actually quiet challenging, however after a while, it got easier. Obviously I didn’t  have any  editing skills and filming skills as I have never  edited or filmed using professional  equipment. To my surprise, I found the editing and filming process really easy and fun. It wasn’t as  hard as I imagined. 

I already had communication skills before the project however during our filming, I noticed I was getting  better communicating my ideas. When I had a go at editing, I was  a bit confused to where  I needed to click  to make the video slow-motion and how to cut the  video but after the teacher  helped, I picked everything up quickly. In my opinion,  my group edited the match  cuts really  well and we followed the 180 degree rule. We used shot reverse shot but I have to admit it was a  little short. We also used a wide range of shot types such as long shot, medium  shot, over-the-shoulder  shot, close-up, tracking and tilting. 

Improvements

There are a few things I would have improved on. Firstly, we could have filmed Lama sitting in the  chair  before Abdi came into the room as when we watched  our film back, it looked  like Lama  suddenly  appeared  in the seat out of nowhere. Secondly,  I noticed that in one shot, the  phone  was on the table, but in another,  it was in Lama’s hands. We  should have focused on  keeping the actors  actions the same so the film looked  seamless. 

What I Learned

I have learned that storyboards are really important, as without them, you won’t really have a clear idea of  how the film would be set out. Without a storyboard, the filming process  will be much  longer. I also learned that communication is a really big part of filming and  editing as you need to  speak  to your group members to actually get the movie the way all of us like it.
