RESEARCH: Blog Post 12 -Target audience

Target audience

An audience is a group of people that engage/participate in the media via watching films, shows or through any type of media. A target audience is a particular group of people where a product (type of media) is aimed at. An example of a product is a film, in this type of media a target audience is a specific group of people the film producers will think of during the filming and editing process. It is where the vast majority of people from a certain group watch or listen to this type of media. Different genres are intended to different target audiences. However there are many categories within a genre so it varies.

Children are more likely to watch animation and fantasy films because it is suitable for them, this means that most animation and fantasy films are aimed at children because these types of films are mostly watched by children. They may want to have lots of colours, cheerful music and fun characters. Therefore the film producers need to be taking this into consideration before filming and editing. This is why it is very useful to have a target audience. There are also more specific target audiences when the film has a sub-genre, which is a genre within the genre of the film. Films like these would be aimed at specific groups of people within a group of people.

Our group has decided to find information about peoples opinion on certain films of the same genre. We wanted to suggest ideas from the target audience, we figured using the 'YouGov' website would provide reliable data.

The first target audience i have researched were people who like The Conjuring.
My first guess of the target audience was female and male teenagers, however it came to a surprise when it said that they were actually females aged 40-54. I thought horror movies were mostly common with younger audiences because they are thrilling and we are more likely to look for intense experiences. I didn't think older people would find them entertaining or interesting. Furthermore, according to this website in the personality tab, there is a quote that came from the target audience of this film "Most marriages end in divorce". This may suggest that the older audiences watch movies just to distract them from the negative emotions (e.g. anxiety) of their life or the real horrors of life.

The second target audience i have researched was the audience from Sinister 2. Again they were female, but a lot younger compared to The Conjuring's audience. This might be true because The Conjuring is based on a true story, all the characters exist and some are still alive. The film also ended in a relatively happy ending.
With sinister 2 it is more of a thriller than supernatural, there are many jump scares, this excites younger audiences. Horror films thus appeal to people who like predictability, in this film it is very clear whats going to happen.
Also, in these type of films there is no question about who is the bad character is.
