A genre is a type or style in film, art and literature.
A subdivision (different parts) of a genre of literature, music and film is a sub-genre.
Hybrid genre: A genre in fiction that blends themes and elements from two or more different genres. Meaning two elements that have been put together so much that it had become its a genre of its own.
Codes: Codes are a system of signs, which create meaning to make it appear to that genre.
Conventions: Codes can be divided into 2 categories technical and symbolic.
Tropes associated with a specific genre are genre tropes. (creates a parody of itself)
Genre Preferences:
Horror
Horror is our first genre choice as everyone in our group are fans of horror films. There are many signs of this genre that i find so entertaining and interesting such as:
- Dark and dull lighting
- Miss en scene -Character positioning
- Technical codes (type of shots)
- Mysterious objects/characters
- Costumes/props
- Classical music
- Non diegetic and Foley sound (e.g. door creaking)
- Spooky basement
- Religious references
- When its based on a true story
- Setting (isolated places, places with 'dark history'
- Narrative structure
- Character types
- Iconography of paranormal horror
i think it will be quite competitive to create an opening for a horror film, but i think we are capable enough to come up with a whole load of ideas for the storyline. We watch so many horror films and we think we know quite a lot about this genre. This has made us gain confidence to use this genre to produce a film opening
Action
Action was our second choice, we thought it will be quite hard to find and make props for this type of film in order for it to look acceptable. We also thought of some thrilling songs for this genre, however we thought the genre was too hard to film. Action films are edited quite professionally to make it seem realistic. The convections of this genre that i most like include:
- Mission awaited to be completed
- Explosions and crashes
- Modern cities
- Fights between 2 groups
- Death of loved ones
- Weapons/ cash/ gold
- High technology computers
- Outbreaks in windows/doors
- Blood curdling music
I think it would be amazing if we were able to create a film of this genre.
