What makes a good title sequence according to Kyle Cooper?

Kyle Cooper is accredited as the man who single handily revitalised the main title sequence as an art form.

Cooper thinks a good title sequence is when:

·         Sets an expectation, which makes you excited for the film

·         That it dovetails seamlessly into the film

·         Makes you forget about everything else and you don't want to be anywhere else

What makes the font in film Seven so important is that it's handwritten because the main character is a serial killer and he's keeping journals therefore the handwritten font portrays that. Also it adds to the overall tone and impression that the film Seven is setting.

Reasons Cooper likes the following title sequences:

Deadzone:

·         The simple typography.

·         The music was great.

To Kill a Mocking Bird:

·         It encapsulates the main characters obsession.

·         The title sequence was beautifully photographed.

·         The form of the horizontal lines integrated with the round objects.

A story based main title sequence is when the 'story' has a specific back story which represents a metaphor. When is starts with an idea and then backs into an execution.

Some problems a studio might face after an audience test screening:

·         They don't have enough of a budget to do another shoot/screen

·         The audience doesn't understand a particular aspect

The 2 and a half minutes of the title sequence becomes important for the studio because it becomes another scene/prologue to help put in some extra information that got cut out. It helps the viewers understand the story line better and makes it clearer to follow.

Cooper thinks titles sequences are important to a film because the title designs can help the movie by telling their back story and put you where you need to be, in head of the film. Also it helps the audience have a feel of the genre of the movie before it even starts.
