The first and main purpose of the title sequence is to attract the audience
One of the steps for making a successful film is to physically make the audience to want to watch the film. In order to complete the objective, we need to attract the viewer. It is essential to keep the film opening as attracting as possible because this is where the film starts off. People normally judge others from their first looks, and the same applies to films, it is needed to have a great opening because that is how the audience will judge the film. Otherwise, people will just leave if the opening wasn't engaging. Examples of grabbing the viewers attention could include using different different types of title sequences (e.g. stylised titles or titles on still images). Good film openings normally give off a sense of the genre to the audience.
In film openings you often see a hint of the narrative, key elements, props or anything related that will come later on in the film. The purpose of this is to make the audience appreciate the opening and this will make them stay seated to watch the rest of the film. Producers force themselves to add little bits that will make the audience curious, wanting to know why or how something happened.
Another purpose is to notify the reader about the production and distribution companies that do all the magic in support. The title sequence also announces the cast, crew and band representative names for credit. Some viewers may find this interesting and get delighted to watch the film, this might be because they have seen a famous company/individual name(e.g. director, actor) in the title sequence.
