What is the
purpose of a title sequence?
The main purpose of a title sequence is to hook the viewer so
that they carry on watching the movie. For example, if the viewer finds the
title sequence boring or uninteresting they might not watch the rest of the movie
because they think they won't like it. Therefore, the opening title sequences
needs to be gripping and one way a title sequence can do this, is by using
cliff-hangers.
Another purpose of a title sequence is to give hints of the
narrative of key elements that will be relevant later on in the film. By
providing hints or key elements it establishes what genre the movie is, and
what they movie is roughly about. Title sequences' do this because they need to
capture the viewers attention in order for them to watch the movie, therefore they generally add in snippets of
the movie to intrigue the viewer.
Title sequences also introduce the Ident at the very
beginning to inform the viewer about the production and distribution companies
behind the movie. The title sequence introduces the credits for the film. Some
credits are: producers for music, sound, lighting, etc, characters, directors.
By informing the viewer who is the director of the movie it's more likely that
they will watch the movie because perhaps they are familiar with their work and
like their movies.
Furthermore, title sequences can be created in two different
ways: narrative opening and discrete opening. The narrative opening purpose
start the movie whilst displaying the credits over the movie playing so that it
instantly captures the viewer into watching the movie as the movie is already
being played. The discrete opening purpose is to also capture the views
attention but the view is not watching the movie straight way, the title
sequence is only hints and key elements which relate to the movie. Therefore by
the title sequence, of both types, the views decides whether or not they want
to watch the movie.
