What is genre?
Genres are important in the media and film industry as they hint to the audience what type of film it will be. Therefore, their target audience will be interested as they like those certain types of genres. Genres also help the audience develop a preferred genre and their least favourite.
Here are some definitions:
Genre - A type/kind/style of film/art/literature Example - Horror
Sub-genre - Different types of genres in a film Example - Horror and Thriller
Hybrid Genre - Where 2 genres are combined so Example - Rom-Com
much that they make it's own genre.
Codes - Systems of signs that create meaning. Example - Weapons for Action
(Codes and conventions are similar)
Conventions - When something is associated Example - Red title for Horror
with a specific genre
Genre Tropes - A convention that is overused Example - Dark colour scheme for Thriller
which becomes a cliche
My three favourite genres are Rom-Com, Action and Sci-Fi.
Rom-Com: The Proposal
We can obviously tell that this will be a romance-comedy film as there are 2 people of the opposite gender looking at each other. Also, the positioning of the characters in relation to the clothes they're wearing is humorous as he is making her propose to him.
Action: The Avengers
I can tell that this film is an action movie because of all the conventions of this genre. For example: a cape, a shield and a team against the world. Behind them we see ruined roads and fires. (Also conventions.) This tells me that this film will be full of action and will involve fast-paced scenes.
Sci-Fi: The Maze Runner
The conventions that tell me this will be a sci-fi is the location. It's all misty and there are large structures near them. Also, their face expressions tell me that this film will be suspenseful as they look like they're running from something. They're wearing bullet proof vests which suggests that danger is involved, which attracts the target audience.
